Imagine being told you only had a week to live.
That was the harsh reality April Hitzke faced earlier this year.
Six years ago, the Toowoomba performer developed a common cold, but didn’t think too much of it until her health began to deteriorate with coughing fits soon plaguing simple life tasks.

"I couldn’t even walk to the front door without losing my breath and coughing uncontrollably," Ms Hitzke said.
She was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease which causes progressive scarring of lung tissue.
As her health continued to worsen, she and husband Nathan began to investigate different forms of treatment. Generous donations from the Toowoomba Community meant Ms Hitzke was able to fly to America for experimental stem cell treatment.
Unfortunately, it didn’t cure her condition and just four months ago she became so ill she wasn’t even able to pull up the blanket on her bed or move to a chair in her house.
Doctors suggested moving her to palliative care but her determined husband knew there had to be an alternative.
Nathan Hitzke was determined to find a cure for his wife. (9NEWS)

Ms Hitzke was transferred to a hospital in Brisbane and placed on an organ donation list.
Just 12 days later she received a brand new set of lungs.
Hours post-surgery Ms Hitzke was told by doctors if she had waited any longer for her transplant, she may not have made it. They believe she only had a week to live if nothing was done.
Three months on from the operation she’s almost back to full health. With a large daily dose of medication, Ms Hitzke can live what she is calling "her best second life".
The couple are now preparing for the performance of a lifetime. Their jazz duo will rock Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers serenading tourists as they stroll through the magnificent Laurel Bank Park.
It’s still a long road ahead for Ms Hitzke but she’s just happy to be given a second chance.
