Niger To Ban Cigarette Advert, Promotions

Niger state government is ready to domesticate a bill to outlaw public smoking in the state if the original bill is eventually passed into law by the National assembly.

The commissioner for Health and Hospital Services, Dr. Ibrahim Babamini Sule, stated thus yesterday in Minna at a news conference to mark the “World’s No Tobacco Day” stressing that government needed to do more in the control of tobacco smoking.

He stated that this year’s theme, “Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship,” was apt as state Ministry of Health  has forwarded a draft of the bill to ban tobacco advertising and promotion in the state to the state Ministry of Justice for vetting before sending it to the State House of Assembly.

Dr Sule said, “We are trying to get an Act in place to stop smoking in the public in the state. The draft of the bill is now in the Ministry of Justice. It is hoped that when the bill is pass into law, it will spell out stiffer penalties to encourage compliance”.
