Jonathan Flags-Off N167 Billion Reconstruction Of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

After many years of foot dragging and inaction over the reconstruction of the Lagos/Ibadan expressway, President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday, flagged off the multi billion naira, 127.8km road.

The President disclosed that the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway was withdrawn from the Bi Courtney company due to evidence of non-performance by the construction firm.

Performing the flag off exercise at the Sagamu interchange of the road, President Jonathan reaffirmed the commitment of his administration towards undertaking strong and comprehensive infrastructural development, to fast track development of the country.

Speaking at the event, President Jonathan sued for patience by the road users for the long time required to fix the road.

“This road is very important to us because it is the busiest road in Africa and fifty percent of the economic activities in the countty are carried out between Lagos and Ogun States. The reconstruction was also necessitated by the increasing level of carnage or death tolls along the express road”, Jonathan stated.

While thanking  the federal government for taking up the challenge of reconstruction of the road, the Governor of Ogun state, Ibikunle Amosun called the federal government’s attention to some federal roads in the state.

He claimed his administration has expended over N2 billion on rehabilitating such federal roads.
The Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, on Friday urged Nigerians not to panic over the controversy trailing the 2013 budget.
Tambuwal spoke with newsmen in Benin on arrival in the state to felicitate with the Oba of Benin, Erediauwa, on his birthday celebration.
He urged Nigerians to be calm and patient, promising that the House would ensure that the government delivered the best.
He said that consultations were still on to ensure that all issues relating to full implementations of the budget were resolved.
The speaker said one of the beauties of democracy was the ability of the three tiers of government to operate independently and their ability to arrive at a compromise.
Also speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin, Rep. Leo Ogor, promised workers that their August and September salaries would be paid.
Ogor, who is the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, said the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had debunked the statement credited to her saying that she was misquoted.
``The minister definitely may not want to deny a statement that she has made; so, I tend to believe her that she did not make that statement.
``I am convinced beyond reasonable doubt that there is no way that we will run into such hiccups; so there is no cause for alarm.
``She told us categorically that she was misquoted, and was actually quoted out of contest; that we should not make it a subject matter,’’ he said.
He noted that although the resources of the nation were intact with respect to the expectations of revenue target the nation, however, had some challenges with oil theft.
He said that the House guided by the powers on appropriation was ready to give every necessary support to ensure that Nigerians had the best in all areas.
