Smoke At Third Age Still Reduces Life Span

Smokers who survive to 70 still lose 4 years of life. Here’s the finding of the Whitehall study presented at  ESC Congress 2013. in the study, scientists tracked the health of 7,000 old men (mean age 77) from 1997 to 2012.

Ascertaining that 5,000 of them died during the 15-years research, accounting for a risk 50% higher than that of non-smokers. Deaths were due mainly to vascular diseases, cancer and respiratory diseases.

According to expert’s calculi, average life expectancy from age 70 was about 18 years in men who had never regularly smoking, a mean that decreases to 14 in those still smoking at 70 years old. “Quitting is beneficial at any age –conclude experts- and it never too late to stop”.
