NDLEA destroys 10,000 kgs of drugs in Kano

A total of 10,488.61 kilograms of drugs seized by the Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency were destroyed at the headquarters of the Command in the state.

The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Alhaji Ahmadu Giada who led the destruction, said that the drugs, seized by the command between 2012 to date, were destroyed on the order of a Federal High Court.

He said that cannabis, otherwise known as hemp, represents the largest chunk of the destroyed drugs, adding that psychotropic substance, heroine, methamphetamine and cocaine follow it.

The chairman equally noted that the agency secured a total of 377 convictions arising from the conclusion of the cases for which the drugs were used as exhibits and counseled and rehabilitated 533 persons back to the society.

Substance abuse, he noted, induces criminal activities and anti -social abuses such as unprotected sex and sharing of needles, both of which increases the risk of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis infections, murder rape, arson and terrorism.

He said the agency remained committed to dismantling the drug trafficking syndicates in the country while pledging their resolve to continue to cut off the supply of drugs to addicts and to keep the society clean.

Kano State Governor, Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who partook in the burning of the exhibits, pledged the determination of his administration against drug abuse.

He said the fight against drugs abuse is a collective responsibility that should not be left for the NDLEA alone while reiterating the need for parents and other social bodies to do more in this direction.
