Seaweed
helps you lose weight. A new study published in the journal Food Chemistry
found that a natural seaweed fiber, called alginate, helps to suppress the
digestion of fat.
Researchers
found that even consuming a small amount of
seaweed helps to block fat absorption by a third. This is similar to the way
some FDA-approved weight-loss drugs work.
More
research is needed on seaweed to truly understand its potential for weight-loss
programs. The next step will involve clinical trials to see if the lab results
will be the same in human subjects.
It is
important that everyone ingests at least some fats in their diet, but eating
seaweed to block fat from being absorbed in the gut may be a great weight loss
tool for those who are obese. Of course, do not try any weight loss techniques
without first consulting your doctor.
