Hepatitis B & C virus infection Are Majorly Present In India - Experts

On the occasion of the the Sixth World Hepatitis Day, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, held separate programmes to spread awareness about the problem.

GMCH-32 held a free hepatitis (inflammation of liver) screening camp in the emergency area, Block A, of the hospitals. On the other hand, the Department of Hepatology, PGIMER organised a walkathon where participants took a round of PGI as a gesture to make the public aware about viral hepatitis.

The walkathon was flagged off by KK Sharma, Adviser to the UT Administrator. About 250 participants, including Dr YK Chawla, Director, PGI, Chetan Rao, Deputy Director (Administration), PGI, Dr RK Dhiman, Dr Virendra Singh and Dr Ajay Duseja from the Department of Hepatology, PGI were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Chawla, elaborated that viral hepatitis can be either acute, which is usually a self limiting disease remaining for a few weeks, or chronic, lasting for months to years.

There are quite a few viruses which can cause hepatitis like Hepatitis A, B, C and E. Of the different viruses, the Hepatitis A virus and Hepatitis E virus (HAV, HEV) cause acute self-limiting diseases whereas hepatitis B and C (HBV, HCV) are notorious in causing chronic hepatitis.

Hepatitis A (HAV) and Hepatitis E (HEV) which cause AVH usually spread through the feco-oral route and the infection usually occurs by the consumption of contaminated water or food.

There is no vaccine for HEV. Hence, to prevent infection, the importance of clean and hygienic food and water cannot be overemphasised. Children above two years of age should be given two doses of vaccine (six months apart) for HAV, which usually imparts a good immunity for 15-20 years in the majority of individuals.
