Police Stops ASUU Protest In FUT Akure, Ondo State

The Police today prevented striking university lecturers of the Academic Staff Union of Universities from staging a peaceful protest aimed at sensitising the public on what they call the true position of the strike.

It is no news that lecturers of Nigerian public universities have been on industrial action for over three months now, and in order to give their action more bite that it is not ready to shift grounds, ASUU members drawn from states and federal government owned universities from Ondo, Ekiti, Osun and Oyo states gathered at the main entrance of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo state to protest on the streets of the city.

Armed with placards with various inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs to attract the attention of the public as they aired their grievances with government on their strike action.

The university lecturers were about to proceed in a motorcade from the university gate to the streets of Akure but were prevented by a team of armed police officers who had barricaded the Akure-Ilesha highway right in front of the university campus.

The same scene played out at the other gate of the university; with armed policemen stationed a few metres away to stop the protesting lecturers from proceeding further.
