Suspend The Strike - Minister Of Health Urges Union

Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu has urged the union to not to go on strike and give the government some more time to act on already agreed issues.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced that it will start its planned strike from Wednesday.

The NMA has announced that they are going to initiate the strike on Wednesday, which will continue for five days so that the Yuletide does get interrupted. After the celebration takes place, the strike will again start and with full force.

The NMA has issued statement revealing the reason for initiating the strike. They were of the view that ample of time has been given to authorities concerned to take suitable action on issues raised like health sector challenges, workplace conditions and status of service of doctors.

A 21-day ultimatum was also issued to the Federal Government so that they can address the issues. During this procedure, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, has intervened in the matter and the NMA had extended the ultimatum by four more weeks.

The extension was further increased twice. All the incidents and other things have led the NMA to announce an industrial action. "Accordingly, doctors in public health institutions shall withdraw their services with effect from 8 a. m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2013", said the NMA.
