Menopause
and the timing of this life process can vary significantly from one female to
the next. Factors such as heredity and cause, whether it’s natural or induced,
for example, will play a major role in when it occurs.
For those
going through menopause, there are typically three main symptoms to expect:
Irritability
The
irritability that many women suffer with during this life change can be
attributed to several different factors, but one of the main culprits is a
fluctuation in hormones. Hormonal changes alone are enough to alter mood and
behavior.
Other reasons for irritability, and even anxiety, may stem from the
inability to control other symptoms that are being experienced. Other factors
that can increase irritability can include the use of caffeine and lack of
sleep, just to name a few.
Night
Sweats
Although
the name implies that these drenching sweats occur only at night, this is not
exactly true. Many women do, in fact, wake up sweating profusely, but this can
happen during any time of day. This symptom is also attributed to changes in
hormone production. A menopausal woman is not necessarily hot, she just begins
sweating.
These episodes are brief, typically lasting only a few minutes, and
they tend to come and go without warning.
Hot
Flashes
Hot
flashes, commonly associated with night sweats, refer to when one feels as
though they are “burning up” suddenly for no known reason.
They can happen any
time of day or night and typically cause the face and sometimes the neck to
become extremely flushed. This is actually one of the most typical signs
associated with menopause. While this particular symptom improves with time,
the severity may range from mild to severe.
