Treatment To Male Menopause

Majority of the people believe menopause are early in woman's life or better still believe it's meant for women alone.
Once the word menopause is mentioned, a lot of men will term it to be women’s talk.
But today, do you know that men are also going through menopause.
Therefore, women may not be the only ones who suffer the effects of hormonal change.
Some doctors are noticing that their male patients are reporting some of the same symptoms that women experience in perimenopause and menopause.
Male menopause has raised some controversies and argument has been that men do not menstruate so how can they experience menopause.
Men do not go through a well-defined period referred to as menopause, some doctors refer to this problem as androgen, a situation of testosterone decline in the ageing male or what some people call low testosterone.
This is when men experience a decline in the production of the male hormone testosterone and this occurs with ageing and as a result of some health conditions such as diabetes.
Along with the decline in testosterone, some men experience symptoms that include fatigue, weakness, depression, and sexual problems; such as low libido, which is some of the menopausal symptoms in women.
Unlike menopause in women, when hormone production stops completely, testosterone decline in men is a slower process.
The testes, unlike the ovaries, do not run out of the substance it needs to make testosterone. A healthy male may be able to make sperm well into his eighties or longer.
Treatment
If testosterone levels are low, testosterone replacement therapy may help relieve such symptoms as loss of interest in sex (decreased libido), depression, and fatigue.
But, as with hormone replacement therapy in women, testosterone replacement therapy has potential risks and side effects.
Replacing testosterone may worsen prostate cancer for example.
If you or a loved one is considering androgen replacement therapy, talk to a doctor to learn more.
Your doctor may also recommend certain lifestyle changes, such as a new diet or exercise programme, or other medications, such as an antidepressant, to help with some of the symptoms of male menopause.

Detecting Symptoms of Prostate Enlargement Earlier Is Key

When male are approaching the age of 40's or in their mid 40's, they begin to panic for fear of prostate cancer.
It is advisable to be familiar with the possible symptoms before it grows out of hand.
The symptoms of prostate cancer enlargement are as follows:
1. A weak or slow Urinary stream.
2. Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
3. Frequent urination.
4. Urgency to urinate.
5. Difficulty in urinating.
Men suffer from prostate enlargement and others when they reach mid-age, this makes many of them worry as they approach 50.
While it is not all prostate enlargement or problems that result in cancer, it is important for men to recognize the symptoms and seek medical care in time.
Dr Isiaka Olayinka Lawal, a consultant Urologist with the National Hospital, Abuja said if prostate enlargement was diagnosed early, it could be cured.
Dr Lawal said there are three different kinds of enlargement that affect men.
They are:
1. The ordinary enlargement medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH);
2. Enlargement with infection call prostatitis; and
3. Enlargement with cancer which is called prostate cancer.
“The severe one among the three is prostate cancer.
It is like treating cancer in any part of the body. The one with infection can be treated with antibiotics; the one with ordinary enlargement (BPH) can be treated with drugs or if the drug is not effective, surgery can be done to remove it,” he said.
Major symptoms
Dr Lawal said one would begin to notice anomaly in his urine pattern when there was prostate enlargement.
He said: “The anomaly varies from individual to individual. First, urine frequency increases both day and night.
Most people in the night pass urine if there is no disease condition but with prostate enlargement, the person urinates three to four times in the night.
During the day urine comes every one or two hours. The power of the stream of urine also reduces.”
The medical expert said one would also observe incomplete emptying, that is there is the urge to urinate but small amount comes out. He said there is also urgency, that is some people have the urge to urinate but cannot hold it for long.
He said another symptom is incontinence that is, the person has the urge but before getting to the toilet he urinates on his body.
“Others are blood in the urine, painful urination, painful ejaculation, and pain in back, hips, thighs, pelvis and/or rectum,” he said.
The medical expert advised that every man in his middle age should go for a type of blood test, Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test once a year because it was one of the earliest detectors of prostate cancer.
“The best way to tackle it is to detect it early .When you do it and it begins to rise, the person will be referred to a urologist who will examine the patient, and do another scan on the prostate depending on his finding. He could also do a biopsy to confirm whether there is cancer and treatment will commence,” said Dr Lawal.
He said ordinary enlargement could be managed with drugs to increase the flow. If it is so big that the response from the drug is not adequate, there may be a need for surgical intervention. There is advancement in the surgery for prostate unlike in the past, he added.
Dr Ahmed Hassan, a Consultant Urologist with the Saudi German Hospital, Dubai (SGHD) also advised Nigerian men over the age of 40 years to go for prostate screening in order to protect themselves from prostate diseases.
The urologist said usually men above 50 years were advised to go for early screening of the prostates, but that Nigerian men and other Africa men over 40 years were often advised to go for the screening because of their high level of the hormone, testosterone.
“African men are sexually active due to their high testosterone level. Testosterone is very important for prostate cancer. We advise every man over 40 years to go for early screening of the prostrate through these three investigations: ultrasound, to measure the size of the prostate, rectal investigation, and Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.”
He said it was also very important, for men who have relatives suffering from or who have suffered from cancer of the prostate or other prostate diseases to go for early screening.

Early Baldness Linked to Heart Diseases - study

Researchers at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, India has found that early baldness and premature greying of hairs are associated with the trigger of cardiovascular events among men.
According to the study, men who go bald before 40 years are at five-fold higher risk of developing heart diseases in their lives.
The new study revealed that baldness is more dangerous and has risk factor than obesity in developing cardiovascular disorders, as the latter was associated with a four-fold risk of triggering an early cardiac event.
During the research, researchers studied 790 Indian men below the age of 40 who are suffering from cardiovascular disorders. 1270 age-matched healthy men were also a part of this study, and they acted as a control group.
The researchers found that young men with cardiovascular disorders had a higher prevalence of premature baldness which is 49 percent to 27 percent compared to healthy controls. The prevalence of heart diseases in people with pre-mature greying is an alarming 50 percent versus 30 percent.
"Premature greying and androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness) correlate well with vascular age irrespective of chronological age and are plausible risk factors for coronary artery disease," said Dr Sachin Patil, lead author of the study, reports Deccan Chronicle.
Interestingly, the smoking habit is also a comparatively lesser risk factor when compared to premature baldness and greying.
How to combat heart diseases?
Cardiovascular diseases usually happen when plaque gets developed in walls of our arteries which finally results in atherosclerosis.
Following a healthy diet is one of the best ways by which you can prevent becoming a victim of a cardiovascular diet.
You should include more fibre rich food in your diet, and should always try to say a big NO to fatty foods.
Continuous weight checks followed by regular physical exercise will also help you to combat the onset of a cardiovascular disorder.
You should also stay away from life taking habits like smoking and drinking for a healthy heart.

Researchers Disclosed New Therapy For Prostate
Prostate cancer can require invasive treatment, which often leads to the end of sex lives or chronic incontinence problem.
But a revolutionary new procedure called high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) offers hope that men can get their tumours zapped without all of the nasty side effects that can follow standard treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Prostate cancer is cancer is a small walnut- shaped gland in men prostate that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among men.
In Nigeria, it is the most prevalent cancer in men.
Usually prostate cancer grows slowly and is initially confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause serious harm.
However, while some types of prostate cancer grow slowly and may need minimal or even no treatment, other types are aggressive and can spread quickly.
However, high-tech HIFU uses concentrated sound waves to destroy cancerous tissue.
Delivered through a rectal probe, the outpatient procedure is targeted to avoid the healthy tissue and nerve bundles that are responsible for erec-tions and bladder control.
Dr. Stephen Scionti, a Sarasota, Fla., urologist and American pioneer of the technique, disclosed that this procedure is very sophisticated technology, adding “we can design precise, personalise treatments to preserve more healthy tissue and that, in turn, preserves more function.”
But HIFU is only a viable option for about half of all prostate cancer patients, he adds.
Similarly, Scionti said the treatment works for prostate cancers that are detected very early, meaning that it is not for advanced prostate that have spread to other organs of the body.
The ‘newsmaxHealth’ reported that the procedure was first used in Europe 30 years ago and has been an accepted treatment for prostate cancer there for decades.
“But it wasn’t approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until October 2015.” “It’s a little slow to catch on [in the U.S.] because, like anything new, it is disruptive to the old way of doing things,” said Scionti, “It will take a generation of urologists to change the paradigm of just taking out the prostrate when it has cancer.” HIFU has also been slow to catch on with insurance companies, which typically don’t cover its $25,000 cost, according to the report.
